The first part of a diptych, this story takes place in 1944, at the heart of the Second World War, in the city of Saint-Malo.
– The title of this work, Cézembre, refers to the island off the coast of the Breton town that the Germans had transformed into an impassable rampart. The liberation by American troops approaching, the story exposes the daily life of several Malouins (the inhabitants of Saint-Malo), while the American troops are advancing and the German debacle seems close.
– The main character, Erwan, an orphan since the sacrifice of his father four years earlier, has only one dream in mind: to avenge the death of his loved ones and in particular his father. Indeed, the latter gave his life in order to stand up to the occupation. Thus, Erwan wishes with all his heart to join the resistance.
– Despite everything, his grandfather’s desire not to see him risk his life prevents him from acting. Until the day when one of his best friends, fallen into a German ambush, is killed, and he learns that one of their childhood friends is no stranger to this ambush.
– Thus begins for him the resistance within a city which feels the liberation being felt, but also within which the Germans, torn by fear, are fiercer than ever.
