MAKING OF
Realization of TROLL TETRAM

Tetrâm is the Head of a family consisting of his wife Puitepée, Waha, an adopted young human, and a howler child, Gnondprom. The Trolls are formidable yeti-like Rabelaisian predators, loving nothing more than tasting a skewer of human meat drizzled with red wine.

Troy  is a world populated by humans, trolls  and other more or less monstrous creatures. Humans all have magical powers, such as the power to grow hair (Trollane Bey) or to make teeth fall out (Adam Stere). Trolls are creatures seen as wild by humans, but very civilized from their own point of view; they chase everything that passes within their reach (sfroumptch, humans, pétaures, dragons...) and, physically very strong (their strength and resistance even tends over the course of the albums to amplify considerably through a comic effect, as in the album Trollympiades  où on peut les voir soulever et même lancer sans effort des pétaures, gros animaux à peu près de la taille d’un éléphant), ils ne craignent qu’une chose : l’eau qui pourrait les laver, ce qui ferait fuir leurs mouches.

Team work

TROLL TETRAM from A to Z

Etienne Aillaud (artistic director from 1997 to 2015) assisted by Yvon Wilmot and Rachel Dauvergne, realize in close collaboration with Jean-Louis Mourier (creator with Arleston of Trolls de Troy).

We invite you to follow the creation of Teträm from A to Z in our workshops.

1. Outline of the sculpture

Land use and model shaping

The model is taken from an album cover and artist's sketches.

Construction of the modeling by agglomerating terracotta balls on a metal frame made up of welded elements.

The sculptor strikes the earth with the palm of his hand and with a plank to remove air bubbles and strengthen the model. The main ribs are applied to the sculpture, respecting the thoracic mass, the line of the shoulders, the height of the neck and the head.

2. Work on shapes

The jawbone, pecs and teeth

The sculptor resizes the jaw according to the plans and sketches.
An exchange of photos of the sculpture is made with the designer for new lines.

Modification of the nose and more precise definition of the jaw.The model is ready to change sculptor to continue the work.

3. Finishing the Troll

All the shapes are in place

The changes follow one another with the help of the designer.
The limits of the coat have been determined, it remains to be determined the finalization of the pecs.

Then comes the change of sculpture to refine the browbones and the hem of the ears. The Troll's fur shows different types of hair.

Finally the Troll is moistened and covered with plastic and the shell necklace will be molded on the statue.

4. Molding of the earth &
Manufacture of the resin formwork

Creation of two complementary molds

The time has come to make two complementary molds, one for the face, one for the back.

The moulder starts by putting sheets of Rhodoid in to make the joints, then places the elastomer all around the part. He will start with the back to be able to lay the statue down to achieve a perfect front face.

Two days later comes the realization of the resin formwork. The hull will consist of three parts for easier disassembly which are colored to better distinguish them. Several layers of resin some of which are mixed with fiberglass and dry quickly. At the end of the day the rear part is finished.

5. Casting the face of the Troll

Finishing the mold

After drying, the mold is leveled and some repairs are made before pouring the elastomer on the face of the Troll. All the cavities are naturally filled.

Three coats of elastomer are required to finish the molding.

When the polymerization is complete, the two parts of the sarcophagus are consolidated with reinforced resin.

Then comes the opening of the formwork without too much difficulty by peeling off the elastomer.

6.Opening and cleaning the mold

Ground removal

After removing all the soil from the mold which is cut with a knife to be reused for other casts.

The mold which reveals its metal frame is washed with plenty of water.

A first resin mold which will serve as a prototype will finish removing the earth and will be used for the painting tests.

7. Casting of the resin fabrication master

Manufacturing prototype

A second resin print will become the master of production. A first layer of resin will be used for sanding, the second one centimeter thick, which will be followed by two layers of reinforced resin for the strength of the statue.

The two parts of the mold are bolted and a resin bead placed on each part will serve as a weld and will be removed during demolding.

8. Casting of the polyurethane foam

Opening the mold

For demoulding, the mold will be placed upside down, to fill the statue, the sculptors fill the statue with an expansive polyurethane resin to fill it without weighing it down.

After three hours, the resin having sufficiently polymerized, the mold is opened.

The two shells are easily removed, then the sculptors remove the elastomer mold at the base to finish on the parts where the roughness is more important. The master of the Troll is ready, it remains to do the finishing and painting.
